Shoot a Formal Portrait
           1. background close to wall --> 10-20 ft clear space infront of background
           2. Placement
               - assistant hold reflector on left of subject (3-4ft)
               - assistant adjust to angle and position of reflector
           3. camera directly infront of subject (6-10ft)
    Camera Setting
      - f/2 or f/2.8
      - for zoom lense f/3.5 or f/4.5
      - use wide-open aperture
     Lighting for formal Portraits
            Indoors
               - one light 45 degrees side of subject
            Outdoors
               - direct sunlight - NOT GOOD
               -open shade= GOOD!
The Candid Portrait
- capture person going about everyday life and activities
- include surrounds
- takes more time
      Camera Settings
             - 1/250 shutter speed
The Enironmental Portrait
- subjects surrounding hlep tell story
- good idea of surounding --> determine how big the subject has to be
       Camera Settings
               - wide angle lense useful in environmental portraits --> especially indoors
               - f/5.6 to f/8 or f/41- greater depth
Retouch a Dighital Portrait
- clone/healing brush repair problem areas on photoshop
The Self- Portrait
- become your own subject
- take picture of self
- usually can't tell if it's a self-portrait

Film Choices for Portraits
 Film Speed

  • slow films (50 to 100 ISO)- capture move detail and creates smoother
  • fast films (400 to 3200 ISO)- More sensitive to light
 Black and White or Color?

  • black and white brings more attention subject
  • color shows feel and impressions set moods
 Equipment Choices: Lenses for Portraits

  • 24mm -> too close
  • 50mm -> shows face as less rounded and broad
  • 100mm -> medium telephoto = normal
 Camera Accessories

  • tripod- three legged stand mount camera
  • cable release- wire camera's shutter release
  • reflector- anything that reflects light into shadows to lighten them

The Formal Portrait

  • simple style emphasize the person and nothing else
  • natural background
  • close-up of full length
