1. background close to wall --> 10-20 ft clear space infront of background
2. Placement
- assistant hold reflector on left of subject (3-4ft)
- assistant adjust to angle and position of reflector
3. camera directly infront of subject (6-10ft)
Camera Setting
- f/2 or f/2.8
- for zoom lense f/3.5 or f/4.5
- use wide-open aperture
Lighting for formal Portraits
Indoors
- one light 45 degrees side of subject
Outdoors
- direct sunlight - NOT GOOD
-open shade= GOOD!
The Candid Portrait
- capture person going about everyday life and activities
- include surrounds
- takes more time

- 1/250 shutter speed
The Enironmental Portrait
- subjects surrounding hlep tell story
- good idea of surounding --> determine how big the subject has to be

- wide angle lense useful in environmental portraits --> especially indoors
- f/5.6 to f/8 or f/41- greater depth

- clone/healing brush repair problem areas on photoshop
The Self- Portrait
- become your own subject
- take picture of self
- usually can't tell if it's a self-portrait

Self Portrait Notes pg. 102-113
- demonstrate similarities and differences between subject and viewer
- formal portraits emphasize only one person (the subject)
- photographs -> reveal truth of ourselves or other people, or we can tell fictional story- photo fiction
- photography replace paintings as primary medium of portraits
Thinking Artistically
- Value important design element when creating portrait
- keep in mind: location of light source in image take advantage of light values, highlights and shadows of subject working with people
- portrait collaborative project between subject and photographer
- easier when you know the person
- Balance between having enough details and being able to respond quickly to your subject
Film Speed
- slow films (50 to 100 ISO)- capture move detail and creates smoother
- fast films (400 to 3200 ISO)- More sensitive to light
- black and white brings more attention subject
- color shows feel and impressions set moods
- 24mm -> too close
- 50mm -> shows face as less rounded and broad
- 100mm -> medium telephoto = normal
- tripod- three legged stand mount camera
- cable release- wire camera's shutter release
- reflector- anything that reflects light into shadows to lighten them

- simple style emphasize the person and nothing else
- natural background
- close-up of full length
